OpenAI is reportedly planning to purchase Google’s in-house artificial intelligence chips, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), to expand its computing capacity and diversify its chip supply. The potential deal has not been finalized, according to reports. As demand for AI model training and inference continues to grow, OpenAI is seeking compute sources beyond Nvidia GPUs and is working with Broadcom to develop a custom AI chip codenamed “Jalapeno,” further building out its compute supply system.
