Unitree unveils five-finger robot hand Dex5-S, priced from 39,900 yuan

Chinese robotics company Unitree Robotics has launched a new five-fingered dexterous hand, the Dex5-S, featuring 22 degrees of freedom per hand and a design that matches the size of a human hand. It is priced from 39,900 yuan.

In a demonstration video released by Unitree, the Dex5-S picked up a spoon, cut paper with scissors and tossed and caught a lemon, showing capabilities in fine object manipulation, multi-finger coordination and dynamic grasping.

The Dex5-S upgrades the earlier model in both degrees of freedom and dimensions. All 22 motors support direct drive, backdriving and dual-encoder control, according to Unitree. It also adds a roll degree of freedom for the little finger, which the company said improves whole-hand dexterity.

Unitree said the hand’s 1:1 human-hand dimensions allow it to perform more complex and precise tasks than previous, bulkier dexterous hands. The Dex5-S has a single-hand payload of up to 2 kg and a continuous working payload of 1 kg.

For joint safety, the hand is equipped with an impact protection structure designed to protect gears from damage when joint motors face extreme external impact. It uses precision micro reducers and has undergone flex-life testing, which Unitree said gives it a long flex life and stable, reliable operation.

The Dex5-S supports a wide voltage range of 15V to 65V and offers Gigabit Ethernet, USB and high-speed 485 interfaces. In a Gigabit Ethernet configuration, a palm camera can connect directly to the hand without additional external wiring, the company said.
