At the Seventh World Media Summit’s Forum on Artificial Intelligence and Chinese-Style Modernization, Xinhua News Agency and UBTECH Robotics unveiled the world’s first bionic humanoid robot news anchors, named Xinyan and Xinyu.

The robots are 1:1 life-size replicas designed for news broadcasting. They rely on Xinhua’s AI current-affairs information agent “Xinhua Yudian” and UBTECH’s proprietary full-chain technologies, including bionic skin, embodied-intelligence hardware, an operating system, an emotional large model and mass production of complete machines. They are capable of appearing on camera to present news.
At the summit, Xinyan and Xinyu delivered the event’s first news report, which the organizers said was also the first news item delivered by robots. Their natural micro-expressions and lip movements and speech aligned with the broadcast rhythm moved the “authoritative information plus embodied intelligence” model from concept to physical application, offering a new paradigm for news communication in the AI era.

The project is a three-party, cross-sector collaboration to build embodied intelligence dedicated to news communication. Zhang Yimou, the Chinese director who served as chief designer of the robot anchors’ appearance, shared his views at the event on integrating technology and art. Starting from camera aesthetics and character temperament, he sought to balance the solemn and rigorous requirements of news expression with natural and nuanced bionic realism, ensuring the robots fit the professional tone of news communication while retaining humanistic warmth, the organizers said.
